{"id":7937,"date":"2026-01-27T19:30:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T19:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/?p=7937"},"modified":"2026-01-27T19:30:52","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T19:30:52","slug":"education-climbs-to-third-place-on-africans-list-of-priorities-new-afrobarometer-survey-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/27\/education-climbs-to-third-place-on-africans-list-of-priorities-new-afrobarometer-survey-reveals\/","title":{"rendered":"Education climbs to third place on Africans\u2019 list of priorities, new Afrobarometer survey reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>January 27, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"424\" src=\"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Girls-pursuing-their-education-dreams-in-Tanzania-UNESCO.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7938\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Girls-pursuing-their-education-dreams-in-Tanzania-UNESCO.webp 610w, https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Girls-pursuing-their-education-dreams-in-Tanzania-UNESCO-300x209.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Chasing her education dreams: girl in school in Tanzania<\/strong><br><strong>Credit: UNESCO<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>EDUCATION ranks third among the most important problems that Africans think require urgent government attention, up from sixth place in 2021\/2023, the latest Afrobarometer Pan-Africa Profile reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new report, based on 50,961 interviews conducted during Afrobarometer&#8217;s Round 10 surveys across 38 African countries in 2024\/2025, shows that only half of citizens are satisfied with their government\u2019s performance on education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While younger citizens have more education than their elders, educational attainment varies widely by country and reflects persistent disadvantages among women, the poor, and rural residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few respondents say that families still prioritise boys\u2019 education over girls\u2019, but nearly three in 10 report that schoolgirls often face discrimination, harassment and requests for sexual favours from their teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysis of the data also shows that Africans value the right to education for school-age mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overwhelming majorities say that girls who become pregnant or have children should be allowed to continue their education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On average across 38 countries, education places third on Africans\u2019 list of most important problems that their governments should address, up from sixth place in 2021\/2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education tied with the increasing cost of living, infrastructure\/roads, and water supply, trailing only health and unemployment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only half (49 per cent) of respondents think their government is performing \u201cfairly well\u201d or \u201cvery well\u201d on education, while the other half (49 per cent) give their leaders poor marks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Assessments are overwhelmingly favourable in some countries, led by Zambia (84 per cent) and Tanzania (81 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, fewer than one in three citizens thinks their government is doing a good job on education in Angola (29 per cent), Chad (28 per cent), Nigeria (24 per cent), and Congo-Brazzaville (22 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly two in 10 adults (18 per cent) have post-secondary education, while a similar proportion (16 per cent) report having no formal schooling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest share (39 pr cent) claims secondary school as their highest level of education, while 26 per cent have primary schooling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demographic groups differ in educational attainment, reflecting disadvantages among women, the poor, and rural residents. Younger Africans have more education than their elders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 13 per cent of respondents say girls are \u201coften\u201d or \u201calways\u201d prevented from attending school because their families prioritise boys\u2019 education, though this figure ranges up to 27 per cent in Malawi and 28 per cent in Cameroon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost three in 10 citizens (27 per cent) say that schoolgirls are \u201coften\u201d or \u201calways\u201d discriminated against, harassed, or harangued for sexual favours by teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is huge variation by country: Seven in 10 Gabonese (71 per cent) and more than half (55 per cent) of Cameroonians report that girl students frequently experience such treatment, while fewer than one in 10 says the same in Madagascar (nine per cent) and Mauritius two per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizens overwhelmingly (81 per cent) endorse allowing girls who become pregnant or have children to continue their education, including 43 per cent who \u201cstrongly agree\u201d with the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afrobarometer surveys<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afrobarometer is a pan-African, non-partisan survey research network that provides reliable data on African experiences and evaluations of democracy, governance, and quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten survey rounds in up to 45 countries have been completed since 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Round 10 surveys (2024\/2025) cover 38 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afrobarometer\u2019s national partners conduct face-to-face interviews in the language of the respondent\u2019s choice with samples of 1,200-2,400 adults that yield country-level results with margins of error of +\/-3 to +\/-2 percentage points at a 95 per cent confidence level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 27, 2026 EDUCATION ranks third among the most important problems that Africans think require urgent government attention, up from sixth place in 2021\/2023, the latest Afrobarometer Pan-Africa Profile reveals.
