{"id":4225,"date":"2021-11-22T14:34:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T14:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/?p=4225"},"modified":"2021-11-22T14:34:56","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T14:34:56","slug":"army-in-sudan-backtracks-over-the-removal-of-pm-hamdok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/index.php\/2021\/11\/22\/army-in-sudan-backtracks-over-the-removal-of-pm-hamdok\/","title":{"rendered":"Army in Sudan backtracks over the removal of PM Hamdok"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>November 22, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Abdalla-Hamdok-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Abdalla-Hamdok-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4227\"\/><\/a><figcaption><strong>Abdalla Hamdok: &#8220;Today, no coup can survive&#8221;<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>THE Sudanese military announced on Sunday that it would reinstate Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok who was removed by a coup in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following persistent public protests by the Sudanese people, army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said he would hold a meeting with Hamdok for him to return to lead a transitional government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The soldiers said they would also release political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamdok, a former Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), was called to lead Sudan when President Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in 2019 after 30 years in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamdok took on the position of Prime Minister with what many viewed as impeccable credentials to lead the troubled nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But his removal from power in October did not give him enough time to make the necessary changes needed to put the country on a proper footing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2020, the US removed Sudan from the list of \u201cstate sponsors of terrorism\u201d and also lifted trade sanctions against Khartoum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, when Hamdok was interviewed for the ALC Radio programme, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/alcafricanradio.com\/radio_files\/talkingAfrica\/TalkingAfricaHamdok.mp3\">Talking Africa<\/a><\/em>, by Desmond Davies, he said that leadership was a key factor in Africa\u2019s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need in Africa, leadership that is committed; visionary leadership that has a project for society, where it takes development as a key leading parameter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamdok said that development should \u201cbecome hegemonic in the sense that the society at large takes it and runs with it\u201d, thus transcending an individual\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, once you lay the foundation for this, and the nation takes off, then it becomes a society project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no fear of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut to start it, you need that leadership, which is visionary and committed,\u201d Hamdok added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the issue of democracy, he told <em>Talking Africa<\/em> that it was taking root on the continent and that there had been an improvement in governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you look back 30 years ago, more than half or probably 60 to 70 percent of this continent was ruled by military dictatorships,\u201d Hamdok said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, election is the name of the game, and no coup can survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is far from perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I think when discounting time, we are moving in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd I would like to believe that risk, which prevailed some 30 or 40 years ago, to a large degree, it is no longer there,\u201d Hamdok added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the soldiers backtracking over his removal from power, Hamdok has a second chance to put things right in Sudan. &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>November 22, 2021 THE Sudanese military announced on Sunday that it would reinstate Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok who was removed by a coup in October.
