have antibodies would be protected from a second infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nWHO guidance said: \u201cSome governments have suggested that the detection of\nantibodies to the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, could serve as\nthe basis for an \u2018immunity passport\u2019 or \u2018risk-free certificate\u2019 that would enable\nindividuals to travel or to return to work assuming that they are protected\nagainst re-infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt\nthis point in the pandemic, there is not enough evidence about the\neffectiveness of antibody-mediated immunity to guarantee the accuracy of an \u2018immunity\npassport\u2019 or \u2018risk-free certificate\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople\nwho assume that they are immune to a second infection because they have\nreceived a positive test result may ignore public health advice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nuse of such certificates may therefore increase the risks of continued\ntransmission,\u201d the UN agency added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nWHO guidance explained: \u201cThe development of immunity to a pathogen through\nnatural infection is a multi-step process that typically takes place over one\nto two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nbody responds to a viral infection immediately with a non-specific innate\nresponse in which macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells slow the\nprogress of virus and may even prevent it from causing symptoms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\nnon-specific response is followed by an adaptive response where the body makes\nantibodies that specifically bind to the virus.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nstatement went on: \u201cThese antibodies are proteins called immunoglobulins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nbody also makes T-cells that recognise and eliminate other cells infected with\nthe virus. \u201cThis is called cellular immunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\ncombined adaptive response may clear the virus from the body, and if the\nresponse is strong enough, may prevent progression to severe illness or re-infection\nby the same virus. \u201cThis process is often measured by the presence of\nantibodies in blood.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nWHO said it supported many countries that were now testing for SARS-CoV-2\nantibodies among health workers, close contacts of known cases, or within\nhouseholds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nsaid these studies were critical for understanding the extent of \u2013 and risk\nfactors associated with \u2013 infection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese\nstudies will provide data on the percentage of people with detectable COVID-19\nantibodies, but most are not designed to determine whether those people are\nimmune to secondary infections,\u201d the WHO noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nguidance added: \u201cLaboratory tests that detect antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in\npeople, including rapid immunodiagnostic tests, need further validation to\ndetermine their accuracy and reliability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInaccurate\nimmunodiagnostic tests may falsely categorise people in two ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nfirst is that they may falsely label people who have been infected as negative,\nand the second is that people who have not been infected are falsely labelled\nas positive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth\nerrors have serious consequences and will affect control efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nguidance went on: \u201cThese tests also need to accurately distinguish between past\ninfections from SARS-CoV-2 and those caused by the known set of six human\ncoronaviruses. \u201cFour of these viruses cause the common cold and circulate\nwidely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nremaining two are the viruses that cause Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and\nSevere Acute Respiratory Syndrome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople infected by any one of these viruses may produce antibodies that cross-react with antibodies produced in response to infection with SARS-CoV-2.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO said that as of Friday April 24, this was its advice, adding: &#8220;As new evidence becomes available, WHO will update this scientific brief.&#8221;<a>
