COVID\u201319 misinformation is spreading worldwide, but fact-checkers are fighting hard to put things right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nReuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford in the\nUK has just published a new piece of research on how misinformation about the\npandemic is spreading around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\nanalyses 225 pieces of misinformation rated false or misleading by\nfact-checkers and published in English between January and the end of March\n2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nsample is drawn from a collection of fact-checks maintained by First Draft\nNews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nmain findings show that independent fact-checkers have moved quickly to respond\nto the growing amount of misinformation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nnumber of English-language fact-checks rose more than 900 per cent from January\nto March, although the total volume of coronavirus misinformation has almost\ncertainly grown even faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nresearch also found that only 38 per cent of the misinformation was completely\nfabricated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\nshowed that 59 per cent involved various forms of reconfiguration, where\nexisting and often true information is spun, twisted, recontextualised or\nreworked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reconfigured\nmisinformation accounted for 87 per cent of social media interactions while fabricated\ncontent was only 12 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nresearchers also found that misinformation from politicians and public figures\nmade up just 20 per cent of the claims but accounted for 69 per cent of total\nsocial media engagement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social\nmedia platforms have responded to a majority of the social media posts rated\nfalse by fact-checkers by removing them or attaching various warnings, according\nto the research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut\nnot every platform has responded in the same way,\u201d the Reuters Institute said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn\nTwitter, 59 per cent of posts rated as false remain up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\npercentage is much smaller for YouTube (27 per cent) and Facebook (24 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile,\nthe UK government has set up a specialist unit to combat misinformation about\ncoronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nRapid Response Unit is tackling a range of harmful narratives online \u2013 from\npurported \u201cexperts\u201d issuing dangerous misinformation to criminal fraudsters\nrunning phishing scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up\nto 70 incidents a week, often false narratives containing multiple misleading\nclaims, are being identified and resolved, the UK government said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK\nCulture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: \u201cWe need people to follow expert medical\nadvice and stay at home, protect the NHS [National Health Service] and save\nlives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\nis vital that this message hits home and that misinformation and disinformation\nwhich undermines it is knocked down quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re\nworking with social media companies, and I\u2019ll be pressing them\u2026for further action\nto stem the spread of falsehoods and rumours which could cost lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\nfalse narratives are identified, the Rapid Response Unit issues a direct\nrebuttal on social media, working with platforms to remove harmful content and\nensuring public health campaigns are promoted through reliable sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such\nfalse claims include holding one\u2019s breath for 10 seconds to test for\ncoronavirus and gargling water for 15 seconds as a cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis\nis the kind of false advice we have seen coming from sources claiming to be\nmedical experts,\u201d said UK Paymaster General Penny Mordaunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\nis why government communicators are working in tandem with health bodies to\npromote official medical advice, rebut false narratives and clamp down on\ncriminals seeking to exploit public concern during this pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese\nmeasures follow recent advice from the National Cyber Security Centre, which\nrevealed a range of attacks being perpetrated online by cyber criminals seeking\nto exploit coronavirus earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis\nincluded guidance on how to spot and deal with suspicious emails related to\ncoronavirus, as well as mitigate and defend against malware and ransomware,\u201d Ms\nMordaunt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\nadded: \u201cCertain states routinely use disinformation as a policy tool, so the\ngovernment is also stepping up its efforts to share its assessments on\ncoronavirus disinformation with international partners.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
