Leadership is an essential feature of all government and governance. Leadership scholars suggest that weak leadership contributes to government failures, and strong leadership is indispensable if a government is to succeed. But does that mean young people contribute to government failure because they are young and lack the so-called leadership skills?<\/p>\n

In Africa, for the longest time, young Africans have been excluded from issues leadership. This is because it is stereotypically viewed as a space for older experienced people, and not young ones, because they are perceived to have many years to live and hence they still have time to lead.<\/p>\n

This was the theme of the inaugural lecture for the African Global Engagement series. This series was established in 2018 with the aim of inviting prominent African leaders to King\u2019s College London to interrogate the leadership dimension of the security-development nexus in Africa and other parts of the developing world. The inaugural lecture titled \u2018Demystifying The Leadership Capacity Deficit of African Youth: Our Future is in Their Hands\u2019 was delivered by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. President Obasanjo looks at the issues young Africans face and what the government and those leaders in power need to do to create more opportunities and platforms for young upcoming African leaders.<\/p>\n

In the lecture, President Obasanjo urges leaders to nurture and encourage young people and to have good succession plans for them.<\/p>\n

Globally and not least on the African continent, women continue to face numerous obstacles from continued marginalization and discrimination in the workplace, absence from leadership and decision making and lagging behind in terms of economic and other social indicators. This notwithstanding, the African women\u2019s movement has been and continues to be a formidable force in the story of the continent\u2019s transformation. Women\u2019s rights and feminist activists have made momentous contributions to the development of the continent with respect to gender equality in the public policy arena, governance, education, peace, and security at local, national, regional, and continental levels. They have also been at the forefront of bringing to light gendered violence and harm to the bodily integrity of women. Many of these efforts, narratives, and experiences, however, remain undocumented, yet their transformative activism and leadership could otherwise serve as evidence-based case studies in advancing women\u2019s rights, freedom, and growth in Africa.<\/p>\n

The main objective of this project, therefore, is to provide a platform for Leading feminists from across the African continent to reflect on and share their leadership journey or involvement in the process of change or response to a situation that led to change within the African women\u2019s rights and feminist activist space. These individual narrations will offer a perspective on a situation and experience that will likely have included the participation of many others.
